Why did my sticky wild disappear? Check how long it stays
Sticky does not always mean permanent. Compare documented rules for held wilds, feature endings, retriggers, and bet changes without assuming they all work the same way.
In this article
A sticky wild stays only for the spins or conditions defined in that game’s rules. It can stop applying when a feature ends, a holding condition fails, or a bet setting changes—but those are different, game-specific rules. The word “sticky” alone does not promise that the symbol lasts forever or follows you into another mode.
How long a wild stays and which wins it can help complete are separate questions. Our wilds and scatters guide explains the symbol’s possible roles. Here, the question is when a held wild stops applying.
The two named examples below come from Danske Spil’s English-language help pages. Both show modification dates in 2020. They explain those documented rules, not a verified current U.S. game build or availability; no game was played for this guide.
Can a sticky wild disappear before the bonus ends?
It depends on what keeps that particular wild active. In Lucky Angler: A Snowy Catch’s Sticky Wild section, a wild that completes a winning combination stays until there are no new wins with it. A separate clause gives the automatic wild on reel 3, row 2 a different duration: until Free Spins ends.
Those clauses should not be collapsed into “every sticky wild lasts for the whole bonus” or “every sticky wild must keep making wins.” Identify which wild and rule apply before deciding it cleared too early.
Does a retrigger keep the same wilds?
In Dead or Alive’s Sticky Wilds section, wilds stay for the rest of the Free Spins session, including re-triggered spins. They do not transfer to the main game afterward, and a new Free Spins session starts without held wilds. An extension of the same session is different from starting a new one.
Lucky Angler distinguishes two sets of wilds. Held main-game wilds from the triggering round do not apply during Free Spins but return afterward. Wilds left from Free Spins do not apply to the next main-game round.
For the separate question of how extra spins affect the number left, see free-spin retriggers and counters.
Will changing my bet keep the wild?
Lucky Angler’s help names two wager settings: bet level and coin value. It says changing either means its held wilds no longer apply to the following spin. That is a specific documented condition, not a rule for every sticky-wild game. It also does not promise to restore them if you change the bet back.
Check both the bet setting and the game mode. Do not change a wager just to test whether a symbol returns; a generic claim about sticky wilds cannot establish what your game preserves.
Two holding rules can produce different results
Here is a hypothetical teaching example, not a simulation of either named game. Imagine a feature with three plays remaining and one wild already held. No new wilds arrive.
- Win-linked rule: the wild clears after a play that produces no win using it.
- Feature-end rule: the wild stays until the feature ends after play 3, whether or not it helps a win.
Assume play 1 produces a win using the wild. Play 2 produces no win using it. Read the numbers as wilds held for the next play:
| Point | Win-linked rule | Feature-end rule |
|---|---|---|
| Start | 1 held | 1 held |
| After play 1 | 1 held | 1 held |
| After play 2 | 0 held | 1 held |
| After play 3 | 0 held | 0 held |
After play 2, one rule leaves a wild available for play 3 and the other does not. That is a symbol-state count, not a winning probability, payout, or profit calculation. The holding rule alone cannot tell you what a later combination pays.
What if the result still does not match the rules?
Check the exact title, the current mode, and the event that changed the held symbols: a completed play, extra spins, the end of a feature, or a changed bet setting. A similar-looking sequel or different rule set may not resolve what happened.
If the matching rule still conflicts with the completed result, keep the relevant rule and round reference if available and ask the operator to investigate. The paytable guide can help you read the units and conditions. Neither a retained wild nor its disappearance, by itself, tells you whether the next spin will win.
